GENERAL INFORMATION

Founded in 1961 as a Centre for Nuclear Research, Demokritos is today the largest multidisciplinary Research Centre of Greece with approximately 190 Researchers in tenured and tenure-track positions and over 500 Research Personnel working in projects funded mainly by grants from State Funds, the European Union and Private Industries.

Demokritos has a strong presence in international research.  Analyses of the Centre’s bibliometric profile by the National Documentation Centre, as well as by Nature Index show Demokritos in the top research organizations of Greece concerning the quality and the impact of research publications. Evaluations by Dianeosis – NTUA  of the Centre’s ability to attract and coordinate competitive Europeans research grants present Demokritos in the top 50 European Research Organizations.

Demokritos coordinates three National Research Infrastructures (Innovation_el, Openscreen and Calibra) and participates in another eight.  It also operates quality-certified laboratories offering specialized measurements and testing for the Environment, Energy, the National Network for Precision Medicine and the National Antidoping Laboratory.

Demokritos participates in accredited Graduate Programs in collaboration with University Departments in Greece and abroad. Today Doctoral students at the Centre benefit from a multidisciplinary research environment and unique programs such as the Stavros Niarchos Industrial Fellowships. Science communication and outreach activities are designed aiming towards young people in the primary and secondary educational levels as well as “open-doors” and exhibition events aiming at adults with an interest in Science and Technology.

Highly committed to supporting innovation and technology-driven entrepreneurship Demokritos is maintaining a dense portfolio of national and international patents.  The creation of spin-offs and spin-outs is strongly encouraged. Demokritos has adopted business-friendly policies that substantially support corporate growth, especially in the early, high-risk period in a company’s life.  In the Demokritos’ campus, “Lefkippos”, the Technology Park of Attica serves as a pole of attraction for approximately forty start-up companies and high-technology SMEs, which are in a continuous, dynamic interaction with the Research Community of the Centre.

The digital innovation hub AHEDD (the Attica Hub for the Economy of Data and Devices) supports the digital transformation of Greek companies with core technologies in the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and 5G Telecommunications. In this direction, Giga Campus by Vodafone and Demokritos was launched in July 2021.

A large construction project will be completed in the period 2021 – 2026, concerning the expansion and renovation of the building infrastructure of Demokritos. With a total budget of 48.33 million Euros this historic project is funded by the State of Greece and the European Investment Bank.
