The European Research Council (ERC) today announced the winners of its Advanced Grant 2024 competition. The funding, worth in total €721 million, will go to 281 leading researchers across Europe. The new grants are part of the EU’s Horizon Europe programme.

This competition attracted 2.534 proposals, which were reviewed by panels of internationally renowned researchers. More than eleven percent of proposals were selected for funding. According to the ERC, estimates show that the grants will create approximately 2,700 jobs in the teams of new grantees.

The list of researchers whose proposal received an ERC Advanced Grant includes the Greek researcher Olga Karagiorgou, research director at the Research Center for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Art of the Academy of Athens. Ms. Karagiorgou’s research proposal is entitled “Agents of Cohesion in the Governance of an Empire: the Anthropogeography of Byzantium, 7th to 12th centuries”.
