GENERAL ΙNFORMATION

A national Flagship Research Action seeking to exploit new technologies in the agri-food sector, focusing on genomic technology, to be applied as a pilot in the olive, grape, honey and livestock value chains.

Subproject 1

The Flagship Research Action (total budget: 6,990,940.38 EUR) has the following objectives:
a) in the olive sector, protecting the “Greek” olive tree genetic material through genetic characterization using state-of-the-art tools and applying high-performance biomolecular analysis technologies, including genomics, proteomics and metabolomics technologies (total budget: 3,090,940.38 EUR);
b) in the grape industry, promoting a viticultural identity for Greek products based on the unique character of Greek varieties, the possibilities stemming from the country’s geographical-environmental conditions combined with the knowledge to be gained through the appropriate viticultural, wine-making and production techniques (total budget: 2,500,000 EUR);
c) as regards honey, identifying and promoting Greek honey varieties, ensuring the protection of bees and increasing beehive productivity while reducing production costs and preserving the quality of products (total budget: 1,400,000 EUR).
The most representative olive tree, grape and honey varieties of Greece will be identified and legally protected, a most urgent need since they are now cultivated worldwide. At the same time, it is expected that end products will improve acquiring the desired agronomic traits closely linked to their terroir.
Final beneficiaries of the 3 above actions are the following:
Hellenic Agricultural Organization-DEMETER
Agricultural University of Athens (AUA)
Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICh)

Subproject 2

It consists in the pilot implementation of new standards for agricultural production, under the “Research-Innovation-Education & Young People” initiative, integrating new technologies and innovative techniques in specific regions of Greece.

  1. Action for Research in the Agri-food Sector in the Region of Crete, funded with 900 000 EUR, with four (4) partners (Hellenic Agricultural Organization-DEMETER, Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Crete and University of Crete (UoC)). The Action has already disbursed 339 999.6 EUR.
  2. Action in the Agri-food Sector of the North Aegean Region Islands, with three (3) beneficiaries (University of the Aegean (UoA), Centre for Research & Technology-Hellas (CERTH) and International Hellenic University (IHU)). Budget estimate: 1000 000 EUR.
